Used Motorcycle Inspection Checklist

Before you buy a used motorcycle, be sure to run through the below checklist. It can help you determine whether a given model is in good condition and a wise investment.

The Used Motorcycle Tires

  • Make sure tires are free from dry rot and other damage.
  • Spin the wheels and make sure there is no wobbling.
  • Hit the spokes with a screwdriver handle and listen for a “ping”.
  • Check the chain for proper lubrication and adjustment.
  • Check that the belt is free from cuts and abrasions.

The Used Motorcycle Engine

  • Check that the engine smoke is not heavy or odd colored.
  • Listen to the engine sound, which should be free of odd rattling or rumblings.
  • Look over the exhaust for signs of damage or leaks.

Keep in mind that repairs to a used motorcycle engine can be expensive, so be cautious about buying a used motorcycle with engine issues.

The Used Motorcycle Electronics

  • Test the signal lights, brake lights, high beams, and low beams.
  • Engage the horn.
  • Test any electronics accessories, such as a GPS system or upgraded audio system, and ensure everything was installed correctly.

The Body of the Used Motorcycle

  • Look over the fuel tank and make sure its paint coat is free of flakes.
  • See whether the fenders and side covers are free of dents.
  • Check that the seat doesn’t contain tears or collapsed foam.
  • Make sure any chrome is free from rust.
